Deep Ellum, Dallas
Now home to over 30 live music venues.
Before 1910, Deep Ellum grew into an industrial center. The area was home to mills and worked as a hub for cotton workers. By the 1920s, many residents had moved out of Deep Ellum due to increasing rent costs. There were few residences in this neighborhood; most buildings were used commercially or housed small businesses like saloons and other entertainment venues such as dance halls.
By 1930, Dallas city planners proposed building a viaduct over the neighborhood’s main street, taking up right-of-ways through several properties that would allow easier access between downtown streets with Central Expressway (US 75). This project took away one-third of the land, including part of Elm Street, splitting Deep Ellum in half.
After the late 1960s, Deep Ellum declined significantly as it became a center for illegal activities, including prostitution and drug dealing, which caused people to move out of the neighborhood. Due to this decline in popularity, many businesses closed down or moved elsewhere, leaving buildings abandoned with broken windows and doors along decaying streets.
In 1979, police arrested two teenagers who were found carrying automatic handguns into “Club Dada,” causing City Councilman John Ware to call for stricter enforcement by city officials concerning club permits that allowed weapons on-premises at entertainment venues. This led Club Dada’s owner Sam Meyers to shut down his business citing economic reasons saying he could not afford an attorney after being sued twice before and citing concerns about security issues related to the then-ongoing Cold War.
Other business owners were also forced to shut down their clubs due to a new city ordinance that banned smoking in public places, which caused people to stop going out and spend less time at bars and entertainment venues.
In the late 1980s, several major music figures began performing, including Iggy Pop, The Ramones, White Zombie, and others after visiting or moving into this neighborhood because of low rent costs compared with other parts of Dallas such as Uptown.
This resulted in an influx of creative individuals who made up bands like Tripping Daisy, whose lead singer Tim DeLaughter later became mayor for Flower Mound’s town government from 2009-2012; they drew attention back towards it as a music hotspot.
The area became known as “Deep Ellum Live.” It included popular venues such as the Green Elephant, Club Dada, Trees, and others that were frequented by local artists performing at their shows or those who would come from all over to see national acts perform live like Nirvana in 1991, which drew nearly 2700 people to this venue for one show.
In recent years it has been redeveloped into an arts district with many theaters, art galleries, and restaurants built around its well-known entertainment history, including several new mixed-use developments creating housing opportunities along with commercial space like Three stories of lofts above street-level retail on Elm Street (2007), On October 14th, 2016 Dallas’ first major league professional sports team, the Dallas Cowboys began hosting home games at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco.
